What are the primary points in the video?

  • Empowering people to do better for the climate and the world 

  • Fossil fuels, deforestation and many other things are affecting the climate 

  • We are putting in emissions in everything we do while other countries are trying to do better

  • We need to teach students at a young about these problems so they know about it young 

What are the major issues?

  • The US is using so much more electricity because our buildings are bigger and there are so many

  • When cows let out gas, poop or burp, they are releasing methane into the air 

  • The US is putting so much more emissions into the US then anyone realizes 

What questions do you want us to teach you?

  • How can we all get on the same page and want to do better?

  • Is a lot going to change if only a couple of people do the change? 

  • How do we teach when there is push back?

  • How can we get students to collaborate about this topic?

  • Be straightforward with the information. Show the scary stuff

Our main question from lab today was, is the Goldfinch, Iowa’s state bird, in danger and how do we know? What could we measure? My group pick the northeast region of the state where we looked at three different counties. We took the averages for the first 5 days and then the last 5 days. We then divided that by three to get the average. 

First 5: (2.6+2.4+2.2)/3= 2.4

Last 5: (4.6+2.4+3.2)/3=3.4 

We then subtracted 3.4-2.4 which equal 1 and then divided that by 3 to get 33.3%. So there was a 33.3% increase in precipitation between the first 5 days and the last 5 days. My group concluded the the Goldfinch will move to a different region because of the precipitation.

  1. What did you learn?

The textbook reading this week was all about the movie “Before the Flood”. This movie explored climate change and its growing problems. Throught the movie we learned about the ice around the world melting. Making it harder for the animals to get resources and survive. We heard how India is trying to make changes to the climate through using solar systems to get electricity. We heard about how China is one of the leaders of carbon emission into the atmosphere. We also learned about cows and their affect on the climate. All of these factors are problems that we have to chang ein order to help climate change. This movie opened my eyes to so much that I didn’t know about. If we don’t change the way we are living the world we live in is never going to be the same. 

  1. What was most helpful?

I really liked this format of learning. It was exciting to get to watch a movie and it was really interesting to watch. Everything was explained so well that I was able to think about ways I could do better. 

  1. What do you need more information on?

I want to know more about the changes we can make and how we can teach people abut making these changes.

The big question addressed in the lab, and a description of what you did. Our big question from this week's lab was, what affects a rider’s speed down a slide? With this question in our minds we made a list of variables that we could test to see what the effects are. Some of the effects we came up with are weight, outside force, clothing, material of slide, slope, length, etc. for our investigation we looked at how the weight affects how fast you will go down the slide. For our experiment we filled a film container with different materials to change the weight. We then slid the film container down a “slide” that was 2 meters long. Through our experiment we learned that weight does affect how fast you will go down the slide. Week 14

  The big question addressed in the lab, and a description of what you did. Our big question this week in the lab was, how do greenhouse gases work? The greenhouse effect is when gases in the Earth’s atmosphere traps heat from the sun and this is what keeps the planet warm. Without the greenhouse effect, the Earth would be cold. This is the “cycle”: Sunlight comes in and warms the Earth’s surface  The earth gives off some of the heat as infrared radiation  Greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide) trap some of the heat and stop it from escaping into space  This is what keeps the planet warm.  We looked at lots of graphs that showed us how much carbon dioxide is in the atmosphere. One of the graphs I found very interesting was the one from West Branch, Iowa. The graph shows data points starting around 2008 and going up to 2022. Week 5

 In this week's lab we wrapped up our thoughts about swings from last week. We learned that pendulums collide with air particles, speeding them up and slowing down the pendulum. These collisions transfer energy from the pendulum to the air. This week our big question was, how can we design a safe and durable playground surface? To test this question we developed surfaces made out of different materials and dropped an egg on these surfaces to see if it would crack. If the egg cracked we knew that the surface was too hard for children to be playing on.  Test 1:  For our first test we place sand, saran wrap, hay, and then rubber in a bowl we tested to see if their mixture of material would make a good surface first by using a tennis ball. We held the tennis ball up 1 meter over the bowl and dropped it. We thought that this mixture would be good, so we moved onto dropping the eggs.
